Into to World Music was the third honors course I attended at Longwood and was taught by Dr. Schattenkirk. This course intended to provide an overview of international music with examples coming from Mozambique, India, Australia, Georgia, the United States, and more. The course was very book-heavy and required extensive reading to fully grasp the detailed nuances of the cultures we studied and how that was reflected in the music we listened to. Dr. Schattenkirk also had to teach the basics of music theory to the class, which I was able to assist with. In class, we primarily listened and discussed the various musical examples from the textbook. Throughout the course, we listened to approximately sixty examples from all across the world. This exposed me to new and exciting styles of music I have never heard before and given me a much better understanding of different cultures and what music means to them.
This was a writing-infused course, and there were two major papers we wrote over the course of the semester. This first of these papers was a concert review of one of eight provided virtual concerts. I wrote a review of the Japanese fusion band TEKE::TEKE. The paper is attached below.
The second paper was a term paper focusing on a topic that was not covered by the textbook. Each student in the class chose a different topic, with mine being Klezmer music. The paper is attached below.
