This is my Medical Surgical class and I took this during my fall semester of my Junior year. During this course, we learned the basics of taking care of the majority of patients seen in hospitals on medical surgical units.
This class was a confirmation class for me. While taking this class we had clinicals within the local hospitals on their specific medical surgical units and I LOVED IT! Most of the other students did not particularly enjoy this class but I was absolutely in love with the content. A lot of the other students found these clinicals to be boring or “babysitting” adults while they are waiting to be discharged. My takeaway from this class was a chance to take care of the majority of the sick populations!
This class took the content we learned in our foundations course and pathophysiology course and built upon them to teach the students how to care for different populations. Once a patient has arrived to the hospital, what will you do? This class taught the students how to assess the situation, gather as much information about the patient and their condition, and how to effectively provide them care. We learn how to put our knowledge to hands-on practice by utilizing our therapeutic communication techniques, using our understanding of each patient’s pathophysiology, predicting the nutrition needs of the patient, properly administering the appropriate medications, and being able to effectively respond to any patient event.
This course took learning outside of the classroom and into the field, where the students were able to receive hands-on experience. We were able to see and experience what we were learning in all of our classes and make connections with real-life individuals.
