Child Development

During my first semester at Longwood University, I took a course called “EDUC 245-50” and it was my first nursing related course. I was very excited to take this course and be one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a nurse! In this course we took a deep look into the minds of humans to understand how their brains, bodies, and personalities develop time. To do this, we studied different theorists who contributed greatly to their fields of psychology, studied how the body and brain develop from conception until death, and the students even conducted their own scientific studies!

Part of the material that the students learned was about the changing psychology of the human brain throughout their life span. Different psychological theorists have developed milestones that everyone meets while they grow. We had a big project where we needed to interview three people in three different age groups (3-5, 6-12, and 13-18) with questions that we created using different theories to try and deduce which mental stage our subjects were in. This was an interesting project because it truly showed us how the mind develops and is able to think with more complexity and intention as you grow older. Once we created our interview questions and conducted the interview, we had to write the report a report and present the data we collected to our classmates through a presentation. This project was challenging in some ways but it was really fun to conduct this experiment.

My artifact for this class would be my final paper. This was a 10 page paper describing and applying the concepts of child development during different stages of a child’s life. Three kids were interviewed for this assignment, all varying ages and stages of development, and willing to help me collect data.

The material that I learned in this class was very interesting but the course itself was challenging for me. This course was only held once a week on Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:45 pm. What made the class difficult for me was the timing. If this class was in the afternoon around 4 pm it would have been great. Because this class was at the end of the day, I was already gassed out from the stresses of the day so beginning the class on Tuesday nights was rough. I got through it and passed the class with a great grade so I am proud of myself.
