In the second semester of my Freshman year at Longwood University, I very excitedly started this course that was going to lay down the foundation of my Nursing career journey!
In this class, we explored the evolution of nursing throughout the years and different aspects within nursing. We studied how nursing first began, the spikes in demand throughout history, how nurses guide their practices off of, different health care systems throughout the world, how to avoid and resolve racial and cultural conflicts, even the challenges of nursing in the modern era. EVERY lecture was jam packed with such fascinating knowledge and useful material. The only thing I did not like about this class was that I could not write fast enough to keep up with all of the important, impactful, and invigorating knowledge. What I loved most about the material we learned in this class was that I could see and understand its importance regarding nursing. I could directly see myself applying everything I learn in this class into my future practice as a nurse.
Besides my Jazz class, this was by far my favorite class this semester. This class was absolutely perfect for me. The course was very professional, structured, demanding, and joyful. Not only was this class very important for my future success in this career, but the atmosphere was very accepting, motivating, and there was a sense of drive in the air whenever I entered the class. The people in this course and/or program are very motivated to do everything they can to not only pass but to set themselves up well for the future. Even though everyone in this class did not know each other, it was not long at all before cliques started to form and close bonds were forged. Because we all have the same goal, we all helped each other whenever we were stressed, confused, in trouble, or simply needed to talk. We all recognized the individual value that we all have to bring to the field of nursing, so it was very important for us all to keep each other motivated and determined.
The professor of this class was everything I have ever wanted in a professor. She was very professional, had a lot of experience (or so it felt like), very articulate, demanding, structured, and had a deep passion for nursing. I thrive in environments where I am pushed and have others right there with me to keep me motivated. The professor, although expected a lot, was very supportive and thoughtful. She would often stay back after each class to answer individual questions and concerns that students may have. Her passion for nursing motivated me quite a lot to keep pushing myself to go above and beyond and do well in this class. Going into this class, I carried a lot of weight on my shoulders because of expectations from family, friends, and myself. There were definitely times throughout the semester where I felt like I was letting everyone and myself down. Luckily, I had my professor and my friends in the program to keep my spirits high and to stay motivated.
I can honestly go on and on about how much I have enjoyed and thrived in this class. If you ever want to hear more about this class, just let me know 🙂
