This course was recommended for me because it was an honors course and it counted towards one of my pillars. I took Dr. Dudley-Shotwell’s class because I took citizen 110 with her in the fall and loved her class. I really like how she structures her classes and focuses more on discussion than testing and quizzing. I am not the best test-taker, so this teaching style really works in my favor. I think that if anyone is looking for a history class, but has a hard time retaining information just from reading, that this is the class for you. I was worried it would be a heavy test/quiz class, but was wrong.
I ended up taking this course in the Spring semester of 2020, which ended up being kind of difficult when we ended up going home for COVID-19. I struggled to retain as much information from this course because at school it was primarily in class discussions. Although Dr. Dudley-Shotwell did an amazing job working to get all of the material online, I think I mostly struggled because I was so used to picking up more information from other students’ opinions/discussions in class. I really enjoyed the content that was presented as a lot of it was familiar but shown from a different angle. I liked getting hearing about the other side of historic events because it made them make more sense. Hearing alternate sides of stories always helps me piece together what I believe is to be the truth. I thought it was crazy that most of the units that were discussed had been presented to me in previous history classes, but so much had been left out because it was too controversial or made the United States look bad. This made the course a lot more interesting for me.
The artifact that I chose was from the final project which was to create a Buzzfeed article about a topic from the semester. I thought this was very fun to make and a really creative way to end the semester. Again, Dr. DS strayed away from testing and this project provided a really great way to show what you learned in her class.
