SPED 289

I took SPED 289 because it originally just a pillar requirement, but my advisor made it fulfill a requirement for CSDS (in place of SPED 389). It satisfied the Human Behavioral and Social Institutions pillar.

This course was one of my easier classes in the Spring 2021 semester. This class was fairly easy because I took Education 245 and SPED 305 during the Fall 2020 semester, so a lot of the information was similar and repetitive. Although I knew a lot of the information, I still learned a lot about specific disorders and their characteristics. I found that this course will be really helpful for my profession as I will be dealing with a lot of patients with a wide range of disorders.

I think that even though I had already seen a lot of the material in previous courses, I still got a lot of new information on each disorder/disability we went over. Without this course I never would have gotten to know each disorder/disability as well as I did. I think it’s really important because when diagnosing or working with patients, it’s vital that I understand their condition so I am able to help them to the best of my ability.

The artifact I chose for this course was my final project that I did on Parkinson’s disease. This was a disease I was familiar with, but didn’t know too much about, which is why I chose to focus on it. I found a lot out about the condition and how I may come in contact with some patients with Parkinson’s. I never would have thought about them as a potential patient, but now I know a lot about how I could help them. This project really opened my eyes to another side of Speech Pathology and made me excited to conduct more research about other disabilities and disorders.
