I took Education 245 to fulfill a requirement for my major. I heard a lot about the course and how it seemed to be a little easy for some, so I decided to take the honors section with hopes that it would challenge me a little more. While the course was still pretty easy, I found that it still led me to more challenges than the non-honors section would have.
Education really is something I’m interested in. While I don’t want to end up working in a school one day, I do find it interesting to learn about the setting and how speech is used. This course taught me a lot about ways to study (SAFMEDS, which was a new way of using flashcards), think about students, and consider what it would be like to work in schools. The course focused a lot on learning disabilities and class settings. Both of those topics come easy to me as I have dealt with a learning disability myself. Even though I have had a lot of experience with learning disabilities I still learned a lot of new information that I never thought about. I think I really learned to think about classrooms and students from a different angle. Without this class I don’t think I would have thought of all of the things that can affect a person’s learning. I never thought of how much home life can affect a person at school or work (which is strange considering I dealt with things at home and my education was then effected).
The artifact that I chose to include was my Inquiry and Advocacy project. My topic was the effect of learning disabilities on childhood development. Like I mentioned earlier, I have dealt with a learning disability, so this topic was really personal. I learned a lot about myself and how I dealt with my learning disability, as well as how others deal with theirs. This project allowed me to learn a lot about a topic I’m passionate about and grow a lot from the process.
