Goal 3.4

Goal 3.4 states that “students will be able to collaborate effectively in a group setting within the discipline.”

Almost every biology class has involved at least one group project during the semester. My very first class, BIOL 120, involved a semester project with a group. In this project, I learned a lot of valuable skills about working with a group, especially because one of my group members was a senior. She was able to guide the rest of us and teach us how to be good group partners. In BIOL 251, I completed my first research day presentation with a group. This was more challenging than BIOL 120 because the presentation was in front of a much larger group of people. We had to learn how to work well together and anticipate what our team members were going to say so that we sounded cohesive the entire time. As I moved into BIOL 305, working with a group felt much easier and natural. My partners were students that I had worked with before in a lot of group projects, so we were able to easily do our project and present it without any worries. Now in my last semester, BIOL 488 has brought a few challenges. We do a group presentation almost every week, about a new topic. These presentations are 25-30 minutes long and require my partners and I to be well prepared. It was a big adjustment learning how to create and master different presentation so quickly, but I think that it has helped me become a stronger presenter and group partner. As I move on to dental school, I feel confident that I will be able to work with my peers so that we all become successful. In the future as a dentist, I feel confident that these skills I have learned now will allow me to excel in working with my team to give all of my patients the best care possible.
