Goal 3.3 states that “students will be able to prepare and present, orally and in writing, to scientists in other disciplines and audiences outside the sciences.”
In BIOl 288, we had to write a literature review during the semester, on a topic of our choosing. After writing the dense, detail filled paper, we had to also write a general audience paper about the same topic. Writing this paper presented many challenges because I was so used to writing with a lot of detail. I struggled to use less detail and make the paper appropriate for the general audience but it worked out in the end. By writing a paper for the general audience, I was actually able to understand my own work more by seeing the information in a new perspective. This will be helpful for me in the future as I work with patients and need to describe anything related to their oral health. In my experience, I have learned that patients can get scared if the dentist throws big medical words at them during treatment planning, so it will be important for me to continue developing general communication skills so I know how to break down complex information for my patients.
