Goal 3.1 states that “students will be able to write effectively in multiple contexts within the discipline.”
Starting in BIOL 120 my very first semester, I had a lot of practice writing scientifically. We wrote mini lab reports for each lab project we worked on, and by the end of the semester I felt very confident in my writing skills, especially writing results and methods of my work. In BIOL 288, I learned how to write a literature review. This paper was very different from anything I had written before, so I was able to learn a lot. We worked on the paper in little sections throughout the semester, which made it easier to tackle. By the time I got to BIOL 341, I had written multiple literature reviews and when reading both of them, I can see how much improvement I have made. Now at the end of my senior year, I feel very confident in my ability to write different types of scientific papers in all topics of biology. This will be helpful for me as I transition into dental school in the future. I will be confident in my writing when I begin writing patient notes in charts, as well as writing to different doctors.
