Goal 1.5 states that “students will be able to integrate physics and chemistry concepts into relevant biological concepts.”
One interesting connection I found was the connection between physics and anatomy. In physics 120 we learned about speed, velocity, and power. In the lab project for BIOL 301, my group studied balance and mobility. Our results matched what we should have expected based on what I learned in physics. More weight near the center of the body helps a person stay more balanced. When weight is further from the center of gravity, balancing becomes much harder for any person or object.
In CHEM 214, we completed a semester long research project focusing on parabens and their antimicrobial abilities. Since current parabens can be so dangerous, we worked on creating a new, modified paraben. We did this by adding or changing things each week and at the end we tested the function of our paraben against bacteria. This goes along with the medical/immunology side of biology by showing us how chemistry can be used to create new methods to kill bacteria.
