Physical Activity: PHED 101

Fitness Concepts through Exercise (PHED 101) – Summer I 2019

To be honest, PHED was probably the class I’d dreaded taking the most. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not at all fitness-inclined, and the fact that I took the class online over the summer made me look forward to it even less. But despite my less-than-positive attitude going into it, I actually got a lot more out of the class than I thought was possible.

Fitness Concepts through Exercise is part of the general education program. It’s a pretty simple class, on paper: half of the class is learning about nutrition, exercise, and overall health, and the other half is learning hands-on how to properly stretch and do certain exercises, as well as track daily steps with a FitBit. This second half is what I was most worried about, as going into the class I couldn’t even do a single push-up, and my daily steps count was less than half of the goal we were aiming for.

Now, I’m not going to claim that I was able to do 50 push-ups after the class, or that I walked ten miles every day. But I did surprise myself with how much physical activity I was able to do. I went for walks in my neighborhood nearly every morning each week, something I never would have done otherwise. I pushed myself to be more active instead of sitting all day. And I found myself wondering why I hadn’t been this active before.

This was something we were asked to consider in class for an assignment, and I realized that for me, a large part of me not wanting to exercise is an unwelcoming environment. I love going for walks outdoors, but my neighborhood’s roads are not very friendly to pedestrians, as I discovered on my many walks. So not only did I learn that I was able to exercise more, but this class also helped me to realize what sorts of things were getting in the way of my fitness. And most importantly, at the end of the class, I felt more confident about fitness and health than I ever had.
