In December 2020 I received a Fender Squier Bronco Bass. Years ago I had decided to learn bass for a number of reasons, chief among that that I had given up on learning guitar. Since you can’t play bass alone, I decided to see if Longwood had a club for guitarists or musicians. That’s when I found the 6 String Society.
Though I was nervous about joining a music club as a complete beginner I was quickly welcomed by the other club members who were thrilled to have a bassist, even a beginner like myself. I was happy to contribute to the sound pouring out of everyone’s amps. I participated in my first concert, the Valentine’s Day concert, playing a cover of Edison Lighthouse’s Love Grows (Where my Rosemary Goes) with the club president, Jacob. He and I got together again to perform Strangers by the Kinks for the movie soundtrack concert. For the 80s Night concert vice president Davis and I did a minimalist guitar and bass rendition of Nena’s 99 Luftballons (in German!). My favorite concert had to be our Country/Western Concert. In a collaboration between WMLU Radio and the 6 String Society, the Music Committee set up the station office for a Tiny Desk Concert complete with sound equipment and cameras. I found that the rhythmic, back-and-forth basslines found in country music were easy to pick up and performed 3 songs with other members.
Past livestreams of our concerts can be found on the club’s instagram page: sixstringsociety_lu
Sadly, four of our members (including the entire executive board) graduated in Spring 2021. Our three remaining members, Evelyn, Brady, and myself, are now in charge and we look forward to the challenge of recruiting new musicians and continuing the tradition of 6 String Society Concerts.
