Media and Democracy was perhaps the best class to ever be taken during an election year. In this class we focused on the role of the media in shaping democracy. What I found especially interesting was the unit we did on the Times v. Sullivan case, one of the landmark Supreme Court cases focusing on freedom of the press. This case was especially relevant during the Trump administration when a litany of antidefamation lawsuits against news outlets critical of Trump were threatened. Times v. Sullivan ruled that the First Amendment to the Constitution limits public official’s ability to sue for defamation. Another topic of interest was the piece of legislation known as Section 230 which exempts online platforms from liability for what appears on their sites. This legislation was key during 2020 when social media platforms were faced with the decision to crack down on the increased misinformation percolating through their sites. Inspired by the debate on Section 230, I chose to write an article discussing its impact on Twitter for my midterm.
