Hello, my name is Kourtney Landis and I am a senior at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. I am a Communication Sciences and Disorders major with a minor in Special Education. I plan to attend graduate school next year to earn my Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology. I became interested in this career my freshman year of high school when I went on a job shadow with a Speech language pathologist (SLP). I found all the different aspects of the career interesting and fascinating. Also, I liked how this career works with people of all ages and worked in different facilities including hospitals, schools, private practice, nursing home and much more. Once I learned about this career, I fell in love with it. In order to learn more about being a SLP, my senior year of high school, I had an internship with a SLP in an elementary school. I learned different techniques needed for this career including different strategies for therapy, how to write individualized education program’s (IEP) for different kids, and much more. I then decided to study Communication Sciences and Disorders in order to further my education and become a SLP. The next step in furthering my education is attending graduate school and then becoming a SLP. I hope to start off working in a school setting with individuals with special needs. I am excited and ready to start my career as a SLP.

The purpose of this ePortfolio is to display my projects from English 470, the professional writing skills course I took my Fall 2018 semester. I learned how to create a variety of formal reports and important rules about these different reports. These different reports include a bad news letter, persuasive letter,  brochure, press release, formal report and many more. Prior to this class, the only type of writing I was doing were informative and narrative essays. The documents I learned in this class are different than essays in many ways including use of plain english, use of layout and design to add to the document and more. Learning this new style makes me think about the type and style of writing I am going to use based on the document being written; some documents need plain english while others do not. I also will use the eight C’s to correct my writing.  I think that the styles of documents I have learned in this class are similar to some of the documents I will be creating in my future career.
