Intro to Comm Theory

This was a summer course that I took in 2017. It was actually my first course that I had ever taken in the Comm Studies major. While being tough, and facing my high level of learning different theories, I was able to earn a B+, which really put a smile on my face. Attached below is the first assignment I ever submitted for the class, and it’s crazy to see how many of the things have come true for me!

“Hello, my name is Kurt Martin and I will be a Sophomore this upcoming year at Longwood University. I am from Concord, Virginia which is about 40-45 minutes from Farmville. I came to Longwood Undecided on a major but chose the Communication Studies program after the second semester began. I love to be active and play a wide variety of sports like soccer, golf, and basketball. One day, I hope to be a sports broadcast anchor for ESPN or my local news station.

My experience in the communications field actually comes from my years at Rustburg High School as an assistant coach for the boy’s basketball team. During my Sophomore through Senior years, I traveled with the team everywhere and my role was keeping an overview of the team’s statistics during games. While performing my job I worked with many people like officials, coaches, and local media outlets to relay scores and statistics for our team. Also, I was in charge of coordinating drills and other activities during practice hours. I learned professionalism and how to interact with many different people, which lead to strengthened relationships and also an opportunity for myself to play in our teams senior night game, which was a real honor. Those years taught me that through hard work and many hours of dedication amazing things will happen!”
