Biology 114, or Biology for the Teaching Profession, is specifically designed for biology for Elementary Education majors. I have never really enjoyed science, especially biology, but this course changed things for me. I learned many in depth biology topics, but I also learned why it is important for me to know those things. I studied a lot during this course because I knew in order to teach my future students the basics, I need to know the in-depth details about biological topics. This is important because when a child in my future classroom asks me the usual “why,” question, I will know how to answer. It is my job to be an expert on as many things as I can so that I can help future children learn and understand.
My favorite assignment we did in the class was to teach a lesson relevant to biology. My partner and I chose to do food chains. We put together an activity to go along with it using hopscotch. We printed out pictures to lay out in a hopscotch pattern and with each hop the next animal would be consumed. It was a fun activity and I have used the concept in my other classes and plan on using it when I am a summer camp leader in the summer.
