Call Me MISTER Assistant

Part-Time: Fall 2021 & Spring 2022

The Call Me MISTER (CMM) program is highly acclaimed and has been in existence at Longwood University (LU) since 2008. The program is designed to address the critical shortage of African-American male teachers particularly among Virginia’s lowest performing schools. Program participants are selected from among underserved, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities. This successful model seeks to reverse the lack of African-American men who are leaders, role models and teachers in communities – a problem that is endemic not only to Virginia, but across the United States.

The Call Me MISTER Assistant will assist with the following aspects of the program:

1.      Admission and selection of students in program

I.            Receive & Review application package for admission to the Call Me MISTER Program

i.                    File Student applications

ii.                  File Student transcripts

iii.                Two letters of recommendation to program

II.                 Help Interview perspective candidates for Program

i.                    Arrange interview dates

ii.                  Use standard interview forms

iii.                Responding to Queries about Program

iv.                Assist in maintaining records of all interviews

III.              Providing support through mentoring

2.      Notification of financial aid process and deadlines

I.                    Oversee students financial aid paperwork and grants

II.                 Facilitate housing requests

3.      Attendance and participation at regular administrative meetings of the Call Me MISTER Program with the Director

4.      Maintain communication

I.                    Internal on campus with Dean’s Administrative Assistant, and Director

II.                 Among the participating schools

III.              Among the participating students

5.      Coordinate recruiting efforts

I.                    Develop strategic plan for area high/middle schools

II.                 Telephone inquiries about the program

III.              Mailing, brochures, and student applications

IV.              Maintain Program web site

V.                List students accepted to the Call Me MISTER Program

6.      Maintain data generated by the Program on the individual students

I.                    File of students not accepted to the Program (rejected)

II.                 Test scores

III.              List of on-campus and off-campus Mentors

7.      Other duties and assigned by Director

I.                    Suit Me Up Project

II.                 Spring and Summer banquets

III.              Scheduling Summer Institute
