William Holliday, Assistant Professor of History, presented “A Merchant’s Tale: Silk and Valencia’s Commercial Ties to the Americas in the 18th Century” for the 33rd Annual Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies Conference held at American University in Washington D.C., March 22-24, 2012.

Tom Akre

Dr. Tom Akre, associate professor of biology, is author of “Troubled Times for Turtles” that appears in the spring 2012 issue of The Piedmont Virginian. Akre “and a group of biologists and students have teamed up with the Virginia  Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to preserve wood turtles as an integral part of our Commonwealth’s heritage. They are working to find out where wood turtles can still be found in the northern Piedmont and how they can cooper­ate with landowners to safeguard their habitats.”

Walter Witschey

 Walter Witschey has contributed a chapter, with Clifford T. Brown,  entitled 5,000 Sites and Counting : the Inspiration of Maya Settlement Studies. Melissa Yeager

Melissa Yeager has co-edited,  with Charles Carter, a new book Pacts and Alliances in History: Diplomatic Strategy and the Politics of Coalitions.  It is published by I.B. Tauris “The result of a unique collaboration by historians and political scientists, this book delineates, defines and assesses the idea of pacts and alliances as a key model of political organization.”  It examines alliances from the fifteenth century to the present.  The book consists of essays written by leading scholars in the field.  In addition to editing the work, Melissa contributed an essay on the European Defense Community.

Christopher Swanson

Dr. Christopher Swanson (Associate Professor of Music) recently gave a solo voice recital as a part of the 2012 Art’s Week at Longwood with Dr. Lisa Kinzer. Immediately after that performance he opened in the Waterworks theater production of South Pacific as Emile de Becque.

Pamela McDermott

Pamela McDermott and Camerata Singers, accompanied by Lisa Kinzer, presented a concert at the All-Virginia Honor Choir event in Lynchburg, Virginia on April 26. The Virginia ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) invited Dr. McDermott and Camerata Singers to perform for the 500 high school singers selected from across the state of Virginia. The ensemble presented music selected from their Spring concert and Spring tour repertoire.

Jeff Halliday

Communication Studies Assistant Professor Jeff Halliday is featured in the latest edition of the ‘Journal of Sports Media,’ Volume 7, Number 1.  Halliday’s article, entitled “Dinosaurs Approaching Extinction: Local Television Sports Threatened by Job Losses, Cuts in Time and Changes in Newsroom Philosophy,” detailed the results of his recently completed mixed-method study.  He surveyed local network-affiliated television sports personnel nationwide, examining staff size, changes in coverage, working relationships between management and sports departments, and their perceptions of the future of local television sports.

Leah Shilling-Traina

Leah Shilling-Traina, assistant professor of mathematics education, presented the paper “Prospective Teachers’ Challenges In Teaching Reasoning-and-proving In Their Mentor Teachers’ Classrooms” at the 2012 meeting of the American Education Research Association held in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Along with co-authors Gabriel Stylianides (University of Oxford) and Andreas Stylianides (University of Cambridge), Dr. Shilling-Traina examined the challenges that three prospective teachers faced in planning and teaching lessons related to the activity of reasoning-and-proving in their mentor teachers’ classrooms.

David Shoenthal

David Shoenthal, associate professor of mathematics, was elected to be Chair of the Maryland-DC-Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America beginning in 2013; next year he will serve as Chair-Elect of the Section.

Wendy Smith

Wendy Smith, assistant professor of mathematics education, presented “The Impact of Post-Secondary Teaching Methods in Gen-Ed Math Courses” during the contributed paper sessions at the Spring 2012 Conference of the Maryland-DC-Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America.  Dr. Smith’s talk discussed constructivist methods in a general education math course.
