Gary Page comments on article in “New Scientist”

Visiting assistant professor of physics, Gary Page, was contacted as an expert to comment on an article being written for New Scientist. The article, “Dwarf planet Eris may reveal quantum gravity”, was published in the January 2013 issue. A short paragraph of Dr. Page’s contribution appears at the end of the article.

Doug Dalton presents paper in ASAO working session

Doug Dalton, Professor of Anthropology and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice Studies, will present a paper entitled Mimesis, Ethnomimesis, Magic and Desire at the annual meetings of the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania. The paper is in a working session on Mimesis and Transcultural Encounters which will be held next Friday, February 8th and is based on his field research in the mountains of Papua New Guinea.

Dr. Leah Shilling-Traina, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, published an article in the Virginia Mathematics Teacher.  The article, “Making the ‘impossible’ possible in the classroom: Cultivating persistence in problem-solving,” appeared in the Winter 2012 issue of the publication.

Keith Rider results from sabatical

Associate Professor of Chemistry Keith Rider recently had a paper accepted for publication in The Journal of Physical Chemistry titled “Helium Droplet Assembled Nanocluster Films: Cluster Formation and Deposition Rates”.  The research was conducted during a one-year sabbatical at the Energetic Materials Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory in Eglin, Florida.

Jeff Halliday speaks on ‘With Good Reason’

Communication Studies Assistant Professor Jeff Halliday appeared on the 1/19/13 episode of ‘With Good Reason’ to discuss the future of local television sports coverage.  Featured during the second half of the podcast, the interview discussed Halliday’s article “Dinosaurs Approaching Extinction: Local Television Sports Threatened by Job Losses, Cuts in Time and Changes in Newsroom Philosophy,” printed in the ‘Journal of Sports Media,’ Volume 7, Number 1.  The interview also discusses interesting and iconic figures in sports broadcasting and the role sports, and sports coverage, can play in a community.  The episode is available for listen/download on the ‘With Good Reason’ website. http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2013/01/dialing-through-the-years/

Catherine Franssen’s research featured in Coastal Living magazine

Catherine Franssen, lecturer in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, is included in a featured article in the February 2013 edition of Coastal Living magazine. In the article “Why the Beach Makes Us Happy”, Catherine explains the role of natural elements and exercise in healthy stress responses. This research was also reported at the BlueMind2 Summit in the Outer Banks, NC last summer. The magazine is on newsstands now.

Kelsey Scheitlin and biology major Chelsea Taylor publish in MarSci

Kelsey Scheitlin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, recently published a manuscript in MarSci, a journal for undergraduate research in marine and aquatic sciences. First-authored by biology senior Cheslea Taylor, the paper explores the impact of hurricanes on the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Leah Shilling-Traina

Dr. Leah Shilling-Traina, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, was awarded (along with six other math educators across the country) a CSMC (Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum) Mini-Grant to fund meetings of a Research Group (RG). The focus of this RG is a comparison of teacher selection and use of written curriculum materials in CCSSM (Common Core State Standards of Mathematics) adopting and non-adopting states, with a goal of a grant proposal to study the topic further.
