Congratulations to Dr. Maria Timmerman, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, who will be awarded the 2014 Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics William C. Lowry Outstanding Mathematics Educator of the Year Award for the University Level. The award will be presented in March during the VCTM Annual Conference. Dr. Timmerman was recognized as being a highly qualified educator and for her outstanding work in the field of mathematics education.

History professor Steven Isaac featured on French web site

The Medieval Center in Poitiers has featured Dr. Steven Isaac as their lead story on their web page, thanks to a paper that he gave at the Southeastern Medieval Association in NC in October entitled “What if the Riff-Raff Weren’t so Rough? A look at Mercenary Origins in the 1100s”.  He did most of the research for the paper this past summer in Poitiers.  For further information (if you read French) see:

Professor Laura Farrell Scholar of the Year Award & Psychology Progress Featured Researche

Professor Laura Farrell, Lecturer of Communication Studies, earned the 2013 Scholar of the Year for the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association of North Dakota.

Professor Farrell received this honor for a combination of award-winning research and service over the last year.  This work included earning the Top Published Manuscript of the Year for 2012 (published in CSTAND’s journal, also winning the award for their association), the top panel at the CSTAND annual conference this year, selection for an invited panel at an upcoming CSTAND spring conference, and presenting and publishing regularly in the discipline.   To earn this award, Professor Farrell also demonstrated engagement in service to the discipline and her institution, along with an excellence for teaching ability and willingness to continue refining pedagogical and assessment strategies in the field, particularly from the students’ perspective.

Furthermore, Professor Farrell’s research on online academic communities was selected to be featured as a Key Research Article in Psychology Progress, demonstrating the cross-disciplinary application for this important work.

Study Abroad Research Presented

Lily Goetz (Professor of Spanish) and William Holliday (Assistant Professor of History) presented two co-authored studies on content-focused language use and student engagement at the 7th Annual Conference on Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum (CLAC) in Richmond, Virginia.  One study compares Spanish oral proficiency development among students who studied in a short-term CLAC immersion abroad program with students who studied Spanish in a traditional classroom setting.  The second compares the affective and cognitive engagement levels of students who studied history as part of a short-term CLAC immersion abroad program with students who studied history in a traditional on-campus classroom.

History Professor publishes opinion piece

Larissa Smith Fergeson recently had an opinion piece commemorating the 50th anniversaries of the Birmingham church bombing and the opening of the Free Schools  in Prince Edward County appear in four newspapers in Richmond, Lynchburg, Norfolk, and Newport News.

Sean Ruday

A manuscript co-authored by Sean Ruday, Assistant Professor of English, has been accepted for publication by the Literacy Research Association Yearbook. This manuscript, titled “‘You Can’t Put the Genie Back into the Bottle’: English Teachers’ Beliefs and Attitudes Regarding Digital Literacies in the Classroom,” discusses the results of a research study conducted by the authors that examined how middle and high school English teachers  integrate technology into their instruction and what informs their decisions to do so.
