Introduction to Writing Poetry

In this class, we mainly had workshops, which consists of 2 people turning in one of their original poems, the rest of the class mates would critique for homework, and then the next class period everyone would make comments of how to improve the poem.

I had a total of 3 poems turned into the workshop, and I was the first one at the beginning of the semester. I was very nervous to go because I had never had anyone read any other type of poetry that I had written.

Throughout the semester, my professor did tell me that my writing was getting better but not still wasn’t good, which I understood. I wasn’t sure how to get much better but I did my best.

Below I have one of my poems that I turned in at the end of the semester for my final project. This one was one of five that I had turned in. This was the one I was most proud of that I had fixed up.

Footprints

Shoes off along the shore,

Creating footprints.

I was following the path of my father,

But I’m not sure why.

My footprints are a bit smaller than his,

It takes a little effort to keep up with his strides.

Him being a successful lawyer and pressuring me to be,

Leads me to uncertainty about following his path.

We have been close and do lots of things together,

Like cooking, computer code, and building things.

Being able to be a marketing major,

Will allow me to be more myself.

This is what I like to read about and study.

I want my work to show up in Times Square.

I pause in his path,

Take a look at the prints

He is leaving.

One moment too long,

His path is completely faded,

My own path lays ahead.
