SMART Goals

GOAL 1:

By the end of services, the group will create a positive coping plan for how to navigate pregnancy stressors at least twice a day.

Lesson Plan

  • Purpose of Session
    • The purpose of this session is to help participants gain a better understanding of what coping skills are, the best time to implement them, and how they can benefit one’s life.
    • Inform participants that there are a variety of coping strategies to be used depending on the situation at hand and what may work for one person may not work for you.
  • Define what coping skills are & their importance 
    • Coping skills are…
      • “Coping is the use of one or various types of mechanisms that are intended to reduce psychological stress…,” 
      • “…coping is a process rather than an event,” 
      • “People differ in particular styles of coping or prefer to use certain coping strategies over others. These differences in coping styles usually reflect differences in personality. Rigidity in coping is less likely to help than is flexibility in coping — being able to fit the most appropriate coping strategy to the demands of different situations.”
    • They are important because…
      • “Coping usually involves adjusting to or tolerating negative events or realities while you try to keep your positive self-image and emotional equilibrium,”

  • Discuss how a lack of coping skills or negative coping skills can impact the participants
  • Activity
    • Coping skills bingo (15 mins)
  • Discussion
    • Speed dating and then big group discussion 
    • Talk to two different people → one person per 2.5 minutes (5 min total)
    • Group discussion (10 min total) → share out; share what you talked about with one of your partners
      • What coping skills do you currently use in your day to day life?
      • When do you need to use coping skills?
      • What coping skills that you learned about today do you foresee yourself utilizing? 
  • Closing
    • Facilitators will ask if participants have any questions or concerns
    • Facilitators will then give a brief introduction of what will be discussed in the next session
