SMART Goals

GOAL 2:

By the end of services, the group will demonstrate an adequate understanding of depression and anxiety by engaging in a 5 minute conversation with peers.

Objectives: 

  • The group will learn about common symptoms of depression and anxiety 
  • The group will learn about some common causes of depression and anxiety

Lesson Plan

Purpose of Session

  • Facilitators will inform members on the purpose of the session 
    • To help participants gain a better understanding of what depression is, it’s most common symptoms, and how it can affect one’s daily life. 

Defining Depression

  • Ask members about their current understanding and definition of depression
  • Facilitators will then discuss depression
    • Define depression 
    • Define common causes – Source
    • Define common symptoms
  • Provide handout discussing depression and the most common symptoms (mental, physical, emotional)

Activity

  • Identify common depressive thoughts and most common depression symptoms experienced
  • Participants will then rank the prominence of their depressive thoughts throughout their day on a scale of 1-5
    • 1 – One of the least prominent depressive thoughts
    • 5 – Strongly prominent depressive thought

Discussion

  • The group will then have a discussion based on their results 
    • This will be a voluntary-based conversation
    • Participants will share their most/least common depression symptoms and thoughts and ways in which these symptoms affect them (work life, relationships, etc.)
      • If group members are hesitant to share information, remind them that they do not have to, but can still write results in journal 

Closing

  • Facilitators will ask if participants have any questions or concerns
  • Facilitators will then give a brief introduction of what will be discussed in the next session

Resources and Materials Needed for Session

  • Journal 
  • Pens, pencils, markers, etc. 
  • Handout discussing depression and depressive symptoms
