Goal 3.5 is the ability for students to be able to perform competently in a professional setting. This goal is very important for students especially in their junior and senior year because this is time where they are starting to look at graduate school and jobs. It is important to know how to act professionally whether it is at a conference poster presentation, or a job interview. It is a key skill that graduating student need to master or else finding a job or getting into graduate school will be ten times harder.
The first artifact I chose was from my junior year when I presented at the Virginia Academy of Science. It was my first major conference where people from other universities were attending. It was important to maintain a professional attitude in front of strangers because not only I am representing myself, I was representing Longwood University and Dr. Amorette Barber. I felt like I did a good job doing that. I stayed at my poster for the required time and I talked to everyone who had questions for me.
The second artifact on this page was from Microbiology and it investigated the effectiveness of different acne spot treatments using Staphylococcus aureus as the model organism. It was important for my group and I to be present at the poster session and be able to explain it to faculty and students from various majors. We were successful in doing those tasks because we have had practice with various school-run poster sessions.
I feel confident in my ability to act competently in a professional setting. I know what is appropriate for conferences and poster sessions and that I represent Longwood University and my research faculty mentor well. Also, this is a good skill to have so professor can write a nice letter of recommendation for students. Future employers need to see if I can be professional and hard-working.
