Goal 3.3 is the ability for students to prepare and present, orally and in writing, to scientists in other disciplines and audiences outside the sciences. Longwood University strives for their students to learn how to create posters for their research and to present them at various presentations and/or conferences. The two artifacts I chose for this page were posters that have I recently presented at Longwood’s Showcase that is held at the end of each semester. The Longwood Showcase is open to the public and students from almost every major are there presenting their work, so it is important that the posters are easily to understand and visually pleasing.
The first poster on this page was from Microbiology and it investigated the effectiveness of different acne spot treatments using Staphylococcus aureus as the model organism. We found that tea tree oil was the best spot treatment to use out of the other five we tested. The second artifact was a poster from Biology of cancer and it looked at the interaction of BPA and BGF on the androgen receptor in murine prostate cancer cells. We looked to see if we could replace BPA with a safer chemical called BGF and we came to the conclusion it could possibly be a safer alternative but further testing needs to be done to ensure the safety of it.
While presenting this posters at the showcase, we had multiple faculty members from different departments come up to us asking about our experiment. It was important to present the information appropriately to them. Biology faculty would get a more detailed presentation while a history professor would get the a shorter, more board presentation that they could relate to and understand. It is crucial for all students to have this skill because out in the real world, we may come across situations where we’ll have to give a formal presentation to people outside the field of biology. So participating in these showcases has helped me gain confidence in explaining complicated concepts in simple terms to where anyone can understand and relate to.
