Reflection

In this course, English 470, I had the opportunity to learn how to write a bad news letter and a persuasive letter. These two assignments are aligned with the course learning outcomes, which are listed on the homepage. These assignments fell along the first course learning outcome, which is, “analyze and produce writing genres according to the rhetorical situation of workplace contexts.” For these two assignments we were given two different situations and then we had to use what we learned to write a bad news letter and a persuasive letter. For the bad news letter we had write about the fixing of potholes in a community and how the process is going to run slower than expected. Then for the persuasive letter we had to write about explaining why the potholes should be fixed. The second course learning outcome aligned with these assignments as well. This outcome is, “create professional documents that use plain English principles (to targeted audience).” We were given a targeted audience to write to and for that it was new to me, because I have never had to do that before. This assignment helped me use the Eight C’s that we learned in this course and I got to practice more with pathos, logos, and ethos. I have learned those before, but this course gave me a better understanding. The course learning outcome number four also aligns with these assignments, which is, “create professional documents that use design principles.” By having the practice to write these, I feel more confident. I learned how to organize them and set it up the correct way. I got to see different types of examples to help me along the way to writing one. With all this being said, I have learned a lot through these two assignments, and I can’t wait to use them in the future.
