COMM380

One honors class I took my sophomore year was COMM380: LGBTQ+ and the Media. It revolved around the representation of the LGBTQ+ community throughout our media and throughout our society. We reflected on what’s beneficial, what’s harmful, and what’s myth vs. fact in terms of how their community is displayed. I realized that a lot of portrayals tend to be humor-ized or stereotyped, especially in shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race or Glee. We ended up creating our own movies/shows for the class, and my group created a Sci-Fi-mystery film about a queer college student trying to solve a scientific mystery. Overall, this class was a lot of fun, and taught me a lot about representation in the media, especially because this was a topic I had limited knowledge on prior to taking this course.
