We are a synthetic organic chemistry lab with a focus on anti-microbial applications of small molecules. We are currently interested in creating small molecule substitutes for commercial parabens and quaternary ammonium cations. Our lab synthesizes derivatives of these small molecules and screens their anti-microbial, biofilm inhibition, and xenobiotic properties here at Longwood. Our student researchers not only leave this lab with skills in both chemical synthesis and select biological assays, but also an appreciation for the interface between chemistry and the biological sciences.
