What is so amazing about Longwood and the Cormier Honors college is the sense of community. Right from the start with the Honors retreat you could tell how close everyone was with each other. This community fully supports one another and they will always be there when you need help. Though I have only been at Longwood for less than a year I know how strong the community is. I have met some of the most inspiring and hardworking people through the Cormier Honors College. I am hoping I can show the same sense of community to the class of 2023 by being an Honors mentor.
A unique way on how I got involved with the Longwood community was through Honors. My first semester here at Longwood I participated in HSA, Honors Student Association, and I enjoyed all the projects that we did. My favorite one was going to the SPCA to help with their Fall Festival Event. It was a unique experience to help with the shelter and to meet the people of the community.
In my sophomore year I continued to become an integral part of the Longwood community. Some of the new organizations I joined this year include Women in Stem, Elwood’s Cabinet and Student Philanthropy Council. Along with joining these organizations I also had the opportunity to be an intern in the Office of Institutional Advancement. This allowed me to reach out to alumni and donors. I got to participate in and help out with Scholarship Dinner and Longwood Together Day. I was presented with many opportunities to reach out and thank our donors in various ways. This allowed me to see another side of the Longwood community and I am forever thankful for that.
In my junior year I continued to join organizations and bolster my membership in my other organizations. This year I really wanted to make an impact on the community. I was able to make that impact this year because I was presented the opportunity to serve on the Cook Cole College Student Advisory Board. The advisory board has allowed me and my fellow members to listen to what the students of the Cook Cole College want to see improved and their overall feelings about how the college is doing. I think this presented me with the capabilities to make an impact and to be able to provide what the students want. I hope to continue to be able to listen to what students want and to continue contributing to the change that students want.
