BIOL 120: Integrative Biology

Reflection

Biology 120 was the first biology class I took at Longwood. This is the class that really set in stone that biology was what I wanted to pursue. I think personally I didn’t learn a lot about myself because I was unsure of most things I did in this class. I think personally I was scared to be wrong that it hinder me a little bit. I did learn a bit from this class about improving how I studied though. I learned I did not study the best in places where I can become easily distracted, I also learned that music helps me focus on tasks. I learned that music helps me have laser focus on things that needed to be completed. This class also brought me closer to the people who I would be spending the next 4 years with. I gained friends who would help me through my hardest times. What surprised me about this class was how much I saw myself improve in the class or what I felt was improving. I feel at the beginning my writing and my studying skills were weak. As I moved through the class I found myself improving in my writing. Dr.Z really helped in that aspect by giving really good feedback. I think this helped me along the way to improve.

One of my favorite things that I did from this class was the bacteria project. Our experiment was what was the effect hot water and Clorox wipes on bacteria growth. While we didn’t gather an abundance of data it was my first time presenting my findings in a college setting. The power point and the presentation prepared me for Research Day in the spring semester. Below I have attached a button with a link to the results, which was the the hardest part of the project. It was difficult for me personally because the graphs were not formatting correctly for me at first. I remember asking Dr. Z and some of my peers with help on figuring out how to finish the figures and how to incorporate it all into my results.
