Conclusion
The time spent in this Professional Writing course is essential to my future. In the past few months, I learned the formats I knew about, such as the resume, have more facets than I previously knew. In addition, the formats I did not know–the brochure, press release, and formal report–provided new challenges for me. They were tough to overcome due to my lack of knowledge about them, but my group helped me to format them properly. Overall, I learned a lot about the aspects of professional writing. However, I feel I can make a list of just what I learned:
- I now know how to identify press releases and formal reports in a real-world setting as well as analyze them for their critical information.
- Due to the “Bad News” letter and the persuasive letter, I know how to use plain English, and what errors to look out for when copy-editing.
- The Formal Report focused on research for the target audience’s website. I did more research on this project than the previous ones, and learned that the critical evidence I found helped to persuade the target audience more than simply coming up with ideas on the spot.
- I took more time to practice my oral communication skills. Not only did I find this essential to my course, I found it important to my career as a teacher and overall professional businesswoman.
- My group emphasized the importance of teamwork and copy-editing one another’s work; all the while in a timely manner.
