Welcome!

I am Destiny Thompson and I am currently majoring in Sociology with a Family Studies concentration and a minor in Outdoor Education here at Longwood University. I have been studying within this field for a year and studying within my minor for two years.  I have been interested in working with families to help resolve any struggles or conflicts that a family might experience. After, my first year of college, I registered for a class for an elective credit and it ended up being one of my biggest passions. Unfortunately, Outdoor Education is fairly new and does not have enough recognition to be a major course offering. This is when I changed my major to be Sociology to gain concepts and vocabulary that could help me use my minor once I graduate. Two summers ago, I worked at YMCA Camp Thunderbird as a camp consoler where my goal was to insure my campers safety and facilitate them around the camp to their activities. Since then I have gathered much more knowledge and information that if I were to go back to that job I would now be able to run the individual activities themselves.

This ePortfolio will reflect course materials, papers and projects that I have submitted throughout the semester for my English 400  Advanced Writing Seminar class. Throughout this semester three class objectives that I accomplished were; 1) engaging in the process of citizen leadership by investigating multiple perspectives on important public issues; 2) understanding the nature of public discourse/debate as determined by purpose, audience, and context; and; 3) chose appropriate formats in writing for a variety of purposes. All of these objectives can be found in the Common Good Project. For this project, my group’s topic was based on water pollution; the Pacific Ocean being a main topic of interest. The purpose behind our groups interest on this specific topic was because we wanted to inform people how to become active in their community and surroundings. How making small changes can promote big changes in the end. Finally, we wanted more people to be aware of the dangers that are happening around them and destroying a planet that cannot speak up for itself. Specific information pertaining to water pollution was presenting to our audience to  We use a website and brochure to reach our audience; completing objective three.
