During my English class, I did a group lesson with my classmates. The lesson being taught was a collaborative short story. This lesson required students to work in a group to create a short story based on the title given. This is lesson reflects four beliefs that I have developed about writing instruction.
Those beliefs are: Composing occurs in different modalities and technologies, Writing is a process, Writing is a tool for thinking, and Writing and Reading are related. These beliefs were shown in the lesson plan. First, composing occurs in different modalities and technologies, was shown by having students create a short story. Short stories are a different mode that can be used to teach students writing instruction. Second, writing is a process, I saw this when the students were gathering their thoughts and ideas and sharing them before writing their section of the story. Third, writing is a tool for thinking. The motivation for this lesson was for students to use their imagination, vocabulary, punctuation and work to collaborate, as a group, using their critical thinking skills to create their short story. Lastly, writing and reading are related, this last belief was shown by having the students read their final stories.
The lessons I plan and teach always reflect beliefs I have towards writing instruction. As a future teacher, I believe that all students have the capacity to writing and it is my goal to see that they do so in a fun, and effective way.
