Public Speaking (Comm 101)

Public Speaking was a class that pushed me out of my comfort zone. I have always been comfortable with public speaking due to being used to performing in front of large crowds; however, public speaking still challenged me in many ways. Comm 101 consisted of only 4 speeches with one being a group speech counting as our final exam. There were also quizzes every other week based on lectures we had in class. Two of the four speeches focused on the same topic that I chose which was the effects of factory farming on human health. The first speech was a narrative speech which was a 3-4 minute speech about something that impacted your life. The following speech was an informative speech, then a persuasive speech, and then a motivational speech. I think that public speaking is a super important class for college students to take. Even me who was already comfortable with speaking in front of people and being in front of a crowd learned a lot from this class. I think I have a better understanding of etiquette when presenting class presentations. Also, public speaking will be crucial as a nurse to talk to patients and the health care team.

My artifact is my informational speech of how factory farming is detrimental to human health and the impacts that factory farming has on one’s health and environment. I learned how to best properly format a speech in order to get your points across to your audience most efficiently.
