Bodies and Citizens (Citizen 110)

For my Citizen 110 class I was assigned the Bodies and Citizens course which focused on many different things throughout the semester. This course emphasized how people’s bodies affect the way they are treated as citizens in not only today’s society but also decades past. Throughout the semester specific topic areas we explored were conflicting ideas about bodies held by Native Americans and Euro-Americans, American slavery, obstacles to citizenship for LGBTQ folks, reproductive rights and justice, and more. This course was speaking intensive so being involved in class definitely helped me break out of my shell and be comfortable not just talking in front of people but also sharing my beliefs and opinions about the topics we were discussing. Usually once a week we would have a long document to annotate and take notes on and once a week we would have a class led discussion. This set up held everyone accountable for reading the material for the class. After this course was over I felt a lot more confident in annotations and synthesizing key information from long documents. Overall this course shed light on certain injustices that are present in today’s society and allowed me to form my opinion on certain occurring issues in society.

Artifact:

My artifact for Bodies and Citizens is a picture of my 3 Minute Thesis Slide from our final project. For this project everyone researched various issues occurring in our society and presented the issue in three minutes with the visuals on a powerpoint slide to help convey your message. My 3 Minute Thesis focused on job discrimination amongst disabled individuals.
