This assignment included creating an effective bad news letter and persuasive letter that displayed professional writing and effectively used the eight C’s. Through both of these assignments I was able to meet many of the different course outcomes such as, “create professional documents that use plain English” and “analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in the professional world”. These assignments were something that I had never created before, so it gave me a chance to really learn through trial and error.
In the bad news letter, I was sure to create a document that effectively conveyed rejection, while still remaining professional and clear. I slightly struggled with this assignment, due to the fact that I had never written one before, which led to difficulty knowing exactly what to say. But, through the guidance of class discussion and the textbook, I was able to create the letter with only a few mistakes. I really enjoyed this particular assignment because I was able to gain a new skill from the experience, particularly in using the eight C’s. I still need to work on how to effectively create an implicit no, but I feel that with the completion of this class, I now have the knowledge I would need to successfully create an effective bad news letter.
A persuasive letter is created in order to persuade a particular company or person to do something that benefits you. I struggled less with this assignment because I had written a few persuasive documents in the past, just not a letter. I had never heard of the proper format to use, such as get attention, create interest, and so on, so I was able to learn and grow my professional writing through being exposed to that. It was slightly challenging to come up with a way to really convince someone of something, especially through text, but I feel as if the skills I learned will help me in any future persuasive letters I may have to write.
