This course fulfilled the Scientific Reasoning Pillar requirement. The focus of this class was to teach Liberal Studies majors going into the teaching profession about the basics of biology. While the lecture style class periods taught us important information like terms and definitions, we also spent some time in lab every week to build off of what we’d learned and put our knowledge to the test. Being a class for future educators, one of our final assignments required us to create a biology lesson for a group of third graders from a local school that would teach them about an important SOL topic. I found this experience very rewarding as it allowed me to practice what I hope to do in the future with real elementary school students.

Stella Morris, Spring 2019: Above is a copy of an essay I wrote for this class, going through my group’s SOL project and discussing the ups and downs we experienced on the day we had to present it to a group of local third graders.
Reflection: Throughout my experiences in this course, what I liked most was the opportunity to create and conduct a biology lesson with real students to teach. During my time at Longwood, I have only been able to do this type of assignment one other time in a different science class. Both experiences were very enjoyable and allowed me to use the material learned in class while also practicing for my future career in education. Also, I found that teaching the class material to others made it stick in my mind better as well. While I understand that this type of assignment cannot be done in most classes, I would definitely enjoy doing a similar assignment again.
