Service
“TO LEAD IS TO SERVE”
“SERVICE TO THE WHOLE WITHOUT SEEKING HONOR FOR THYSELF”
When most people think about “service,” they think about community service/volunteer work. While community service is a wonderful thing, that’s not all that “service” means to members of the Cormier Honors College at Longwood University.
So often I see CHC students searching for ways to do good. This is true of the majority of Longwood students, but it is especially true of CHC students, who make a special effort to be cognizant of the mottoes of the two secret societies on campus: “To Lead Is to Serve” (Princeps’s motto) and “Service to the Whole Without Seeking Honor for Thyself” (CHI’s motto). Whether it’s running ahead to grab a door for someone with his or her arms full, picking up and throwing away trash on campus or in a public place as they walk by, or checking on people who seem to be having a bad week, Honors students are always looking out for their fellow community members.
With that being said, community service opportunities are abundant for Honors students, as well. I was able to volunteer at a food bank within my first four days as a student at Longwood University because of the Honors College! We are also made aware of different needs in the community through our weekly newsletter sent by the Honors College to each Honors student, so there is always a way to get involved in serving others!
While Honors students are exceedingly blessed by the endless opportunities for personal growth, it is important to each of us that we not lose sight of the ways we can do good for others, as well. The Cormier Honors College does an excellent job of helping its students keep things in perspective.
