Technology in the Classroom

Technology can be a great thing for students to have, there is endless amounts of information that can be found on the internet. However, there is a lot of controversy about technology being allowed in the classroom. Are students using their laptops and cellphones in a way that will benefit them academically, or are they online shopping in class?

There was a study published in the journal Educational Philosophy which showed that technology in the classroom leads to lower exam scores. The scores from the students in the study who were allowed to use technology during class were lowered by about half a letter grade. Students who were permitted from using technology during class had drastically better scores.

These results also reflect those in the work place. If they have the internet at their fingertips, they are bound to be distracted by it. Not only is this a distraction to the individual student or employee, but it can be a distraction to those around them.

I can vividly remember a peer of mine watching Netflix in class and online shopping; I often found myself watching Netflix over her shoulder or helping her pick out cute clothes. In the end, it hurt my grades because her actions were distracting towards me.
