Courses

These are examples of courses that I have taken at Longwood University that I value and believe have best prepared me for my future career.

COMM 101 – Public Speaking

This was a course that I had been dreading since my first day at Longwood, however, it was extremely rewarding and helped me branch out and break out of my comfort zone. This course helped me successfully present stories, arguments, and information. I have been using my skills I learned from this course ever since I took it my sophomore year.

COMM 141 – Intro to Media Writing

This course taught me how to successfully tell a news or biographical story in the Associated Press style. We were taught how to set up, conduct, and record interviews with clients and also how to structure these stories to make them “news worthy”. While I do not aim to become a journalist, I have been using these writing techniques to construct posts for social media.

COMM 240 – Digital Editing

This course showed me how to take what I learned in COMM 141 and tell those stories visually. We learned how to edit videos in Adobe Premiere and Final Cut ProX and we were taught how to use Canon XF300 cameras. This course helped me further develop an artistic eye for filmography and effectively tell a story visually.

COMM 410 – Digital & Social Media Technology

This course has taught me how to successfully produce and maintain a blog online. Rather than heavily focusing on the content of the blogs, this course looked further into how to promote and develop an audience for your blog. This will help me in my future career because I want to become a Social Media manager for a small business. In order to do this, you have to extensively research how to gain a following on social media and what promotions posted are most successful. This course has allowed me to do both.
