Common Good Project

Mermaids Against Ocean Dumping

Reflection:

With a partner from class, we were assigned a Common Good project. We were assigned to complete three tasks: to create a website, a brochure or video, and a rationale statement. We were given a list of suggestions to come up with a project topic to work on. My partner and I decided on the topic of Life Under Water with a focus on the effects of ocean dumping. We used the Great Pacific Garbage Patch as an example of how ocean dumping is affecting our ocean. We came up with simple alternatives to reduce our waste. My partner and I used our knowledge of the concepts we learned from the course to persuade our audience to take action. Of these concepts we utilized: pathos, logos, identification, iconic photographs, values, beliefs, and attitudes, and civic engagement. The project was a lot of work but it was something I enjoyed from being able to create something that can reach an audience to get them thinking about the conditions of the oceans and how we can make a change.
