My senior seminar course was taken as an independent study and was my last course I took at Longwood. It was a perfect course to encompass skills I have gained by being a math, undergraduate student. The class made me reflect on how far I had come. It has been very interesting tackling my degree in math because it has changed the way I approach different challenges. It has sharpened my logical thought process, as well as made by thinking more abstract. For this course, I was able to practice these different thinking skills by creating different models for certain scenarios. For example, using excel I created models to track credit card debt and I created models that tracked the impact of hunting and weather on different animal populations.
To encompass the different projects, I had completed for this class, my honors enhancement project focused on five different mini projects that analyzed the effects of interest on retirement savings plans, mortgage payments, credit cards, and investments/stocks. I really enjoyed this class, and specifically this project because it focused on applying the different mathematics to everyday life. In addition, it made me have a new appreciation for finance. For the future, I know as a math teacher I will often be asked “Why are we learning this?” This course, like others, makes me a huge advocate for project-based learning in the classroom. I hope to guide my students thinking but let them be the drivers in their educational experiences.
