Hello, welcome to my blog!
My name is Tamia Daniel and I’m a rising junior in the Cormier Honors College at Longwood University. I’m majoring in Liberal Studies with a concentration in elementary education. I hope to become a kindergarten teacher in the future.
Why I chose Longwood
I chose Longwood University because of the people and the community. It’s a very small school and everyone is so friendly and approachable. During my first year at Longwood, I have met some amazing people, I made deans list, and I joined multiple clubs and organizations on campus. I have joined Imprint praise team, B.A.S.I.C gospel choir, and Lancer Productions. I’m currently the treasurer for Imprint praise team, the historian for B.A.S.I.C gospel choir, and the director of graphics for Lancer Productions. Also, I was approved to become a peer mentor for the 2020 – 2021 school year.
Why I chose to major in Liberal Studies
I decided to major in Liberal Studies because of one little girl, who I will never forget. A few years ago, while I volunteered with the LeafSpring daycare, I met this young girl who was autistic. We formed a very special bond and I will never forget her. I started to mentor her and I felt like I was her protector. I talked with her and provided her with reassurance and let her know that she could achieve whatever she put her mind too. As I grew closer to her I realized that working with autistic children you have to change how you relate to them and change their environment. In order to give them a greater opportunity of learning, you have to understand the child and meet their individual needs. I felt such a tremendous accomplishment to have watched her grow from a small child who only spoke two to three words to attending middle school and speaking in sentences. Being around her and teaching her, helped me realize that I want to inspire the younger generation and help establish their futures. I want to encourage them to know that they can be whatever they put their minds too.
