Public Speaking

Comm 101, Public Speaking, is a fantastic class I took during spring semester of my freshman year. The course covers all aspects of public speaking including captivating a crowd, being grammatically correct, how to cover complex topics and voice an opinion in an appropriate and effective way.

Professor Sweet shows personal interest in her students and creates a classroom environment that allows students to grow on a both personal and academic levels. The first assignment was an ‘About You’ speech. I received constructive criticism that I was able to use to improve all my other speeches. Professor Sweet’s assignments are different each time because they highlight a unique skill set and target different audiences.

Before taking Comm 101, I struggled with anxiety when making a classroom presentation. Each class before Covid-19, we had a public speaking assignment so when I had a formal speech, I was less anxious and used to standing in front of the class. After Covid-19, we had to submit a video presentation every week. This too helped me feel comfortable presenting and not be camera/crowd shy. Lessons learned in this class will serve every student well. I am more confident in my ability to present as well as communicate a message to an audience.

Above is a video presentation I submitted remotely during Comm 101, Public Speaking. The prompt was to read a children’s book and communicate the book content effectively for the age group of a potential viewer. I am proud of my video because I did a good job coping with my anxiety and presented the material in a genuine way. I added expressions and feel this assignment showed me I have the ability to read out loud and put emotion behind the words.
