Lesson plans i have developed at my time at Longwood University

Below is a lesson plan that I created in the Kinesiology class that was required to take at Longwood University:

SOL :   Matter

2.3 The student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Key concepts include

a) identification of distinguishing characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases;

Prerequisites:

Listening, space awareness, science knowledge
Suggested Grade Level:

K – 2
Materials Needed:

Music
Description of Idea

Have students stand in general space. Explain to students what a molecule is. When in a solid molecules are not moving. In a liquid, molecules had minimal movement. And in a gas, molecules can jump and float and go wherever they please.

While the music is playing, teacher will say “liquid”, and students will gallop in general space. When the teacher calls out “gas”, the students will jump up and down in personal space. When the teacher calls out “solid”, the students will stand still.

When the music stops students will call out what solid, liquid or gas they are. For example, ice cream, computer, smoke, etc. It is the students choice!

Optional: When students call out what item they are, they can group together with the same student solid liquid or gas and repeat the round.

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities

Students can wiggle fingers at different speeds or move wheelchair in a straight line, circle, or zig zag depending on movement availability.

Here is another lesson plan I created for the same class:

Taking Care of Your Chompers

Summary

  1. Subject(s):  Health / Physical Education
  2. Topic or Unit of Study: Correctly instructing students to brush their teeth
  3. Grade/Level: K-3
  4. Objective:  Students will gain an understanding of how and why an individual should brush their teeth. Specifically the correct motions, how long one should brush their teeth, and what happens when one forgets to brush their teeth.
  1. Time Allotment: 15 minutes

Implementation

Learning Context:

  1. Cognitive: At the end of the lesson on tooth hygiene, students should recognize the health benefits of brushing their teeth.
  1. Social: Students should be on task. They should participate in the given activities. For example, when the song is played, they should try to sing along but is not required. While the song is playing the students should, to their best ability, to try to repeat the hand gesture.

Procedure

  1. Introduction Questions
    1. How many students brush their teeth every day?
    2. How many students brush their teeth twice a day?
    3. Do you know why we brush our teeth?
    4. Do you know how to properly brush your teeth?
  2. Introduce Toothbrush and Toothpaste (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd4WnsXwdqw&app=desktop Video)
    1. Toothbrush
      1. Show and explain the correct way to hold the toothbrush
      2. Remind the students how to correctly brush teeth by
        1. Explain and show how you should go to one side to the other
        2. Remind them what a circle looks like
        3. Explain and show how to get the whole tooth (ex. Move toothbrush in a circular motion)
      3. Show and explain how to brush all your teeth.
      4. Play video, we have them practice than explain that you should brush your teeth for two minutes
    2. Toothpaste
      1. Ask the question, “What do we use soap for
        1. To wash and clean our hands
      2. Explain that Toothpaste is like soap but for our teeth
  3. The Nasties also are known as Plaque
    1. Video  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waNuZ8PEe1c

Those nasties of tiny food particles left over from when you eat

  1. Egg Demonstration
    1. Show the clean egg
      1. How is the egg similar to the teeth inside your mouth?
    2. Show the egg that has been placed in soda
      1. Does this egg look healthy?
        1. This is what some teeth may look like if you do not brush your teeth.

Differentiated Instruction

  1. Visual Learners: We will be showing the two videos
  1. Auditory Learners: One of the videos has a song for instruction. Another video has just an explanation.
  1. Kinesthetic Learners: Students will be encouraged to sing along with one of the videos and some may even participate in the movements that are shown.

Materials & Resources

  1. Instructional Materials:
    1. Laptop (to show video)
    2. Stained egg (soaked overnight in a cola soft drink) and clean egg
    3. Toothpaste
    4. Toothbrushes
    5. Picture of plaque
  2.  Resources Used:
    1. Gourlay, J. (n.d.). View a plan. Retrieved from http://lessonplanspage.com/peopenwidebrushinsidedentalhygienek3-htm/

Assessment

  1. Discussion of what we learned
  1. Another option for students would be to demonstrate how to brush their teeth
    1. One would be looking for an up or down motion. Another motion would be moving the toothbrush move side to side. The last motion would be to move the brush in a circular motion.
