May 25, 2017

The Center for Faculty Enrichment (CAFE) and the Core Curriculum Committee invite you to a workshop focused on developing coursework for Longwood’s new core curriculum program, with a particular emphasis on strategies for achieving horizontal and vertical integration.  By the end of the day, participants will better understand not only how we as a diverse faculty can achieve curricular coherence within a shared course or Pillar taught by multiple disciplines (horizontal), but how we can likewise ensure effective scaffolding for students as they move from one level of the Core to the next (vertical). While this workshop will touch on virtually all aspects of the Core including teaching communication skills, the main focus will be on Foundation-level coursework, which will be offered during the 2018-19 academic year.

This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Paul Hanstedt, Professor of English at Roanoke College.  Dr. Hanstedt was named the 2014 Virginia Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.  He was one of the campus leaders in Roanoke College’s revision of their general education program, and he consults with universities both in the U.S. and abroad about matters of liberal education, course design, and writing pedagogies. He is the author of the book, General Education Essentials: A Guide for College Faculty.
