Fall Semester Courses 2019

Health Assessment Across Lifespans 210

In this course we learned a lot about health assessments. We learned about systems within the body and how was exam them for changes and the abnormalities that may occur with aging. We were required to take a skills exam that focused on the head to toe exam that a nurse would complete upon a new arrival. This course was very similar to clinical skills but more focused. In clinical skills we were taught general skills and how to do them. In this course we focused more on the specific body systems and how they may be affected.

The artifact I chose for this course is my study guide for my final. I have chosen this because it shows all the information we are required to know. We make decisions and back them up with this information. When completing a general or focused exam we need to be able to pick up on certain signs and determine if there is a problem and what it may be.

Clinical Skills Nursing Practice 220

In this course I learned about the skills related to nursing and why we do things the way we do. We are taught the correct procedures and critiqued to ensure we don’t develop bad habits that could cause harm to our patients. This course ensured our education on the safe care of our patients. We learned things as simple as hand hygiene and things more complicated such as inserting a Foley catheter. This was one of my favorite courses because I got to work with my peers and practice skills that nurses preform. When we learned skills we also were taught what to look for during and after the procedure. The professor explained what is typical and what to do if we see something that is not supposed to occur. I thoroughly enjoyed this nursing class and discussion what to do in the clinical situations we may be presented with. At the end of this course I felt prepared to enter the clinical setting in the next semester.

The artifact I chose for this course was difficult to pick because we did not write papers or have a lot to show as proof for the skills we have learned. So I have determined to use our skills check off sheet. This shows how much I have learned through out the semester. These signatures signify my work to perfect my skills and my dedication to becoming the best nurse I can be.

Introduction to Psychology 101

In this course I learned a lot about the mind and how it works. It is interesting to think about all that the brain controls and what it needs to keep it healthy. I enjoyed the lectures in class because they were interactive. We entered discussions and shared ideas of how things my affect your brain. My professors son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and shared her experiences with brain disorders. It was very interesting. We also learned about research done in the past which brought us to why we think the way we do. The experiments were interesting because they completed before there were rules about what you can and cannot do. While I do not agree with them, it is interesting to see what they found out. While in this class we also participated in other students experiments. I really enjoyed the experience of participating in them and helping students with their research.

The article I chose was the final project we completed for the class. For this I researched the effects of substances on a baby before and after birth. I researched this because it was briefly mentioned in class and I felt there was more information that should have been mentioned. I did research on the most prevalent information related to the substances I researched. It was very eye opening to how certain things effect the infant at birth and through out their lives.
