Comparative Research- The Kardashians and D’amelios

Families that have reality TV shows often struggle to be in the spotlight. The problem with being in the public eye is that your small mistakes seem way larger when so many people are aware of them. One of the most famous families in America is the Kardashians, they are a large family that began with Robert Kardashian who married Kris Jenner. Kris and Robert Kardashian had three daughters Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe, and a son named Rob. Kris and Robert later divorced, and Kris remarried Caitlyn Jenner whom she later had Kendall and Kylie Jenner. This large family has built an empire from their reality TV show which they were earlier despised for but have grown to be wonderful businesswomen who have made many accomplishments. Everyone always claimed that the Kardashians were famous for no reason or because of scandals, the family used their platform to build a respectable name for themselves. I’ve personally grown up watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians and when I began watching a show that was recommended to me on Hulu called The D’amelio Show. When I originally saw this, I was uninterested in watching because I knew Dixie and Charlie D’amelio on TikTok and I wasn’t interested in their content. However, one night I decided to watch the first episode and I instantly became hooked because the show seemed like Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Although they aesthetically look the same, their struggles and family dynamics seem similar as well as the style of the show. In the D’amelio show they include moments with their friends who are also famous which makes the show more interesting to watch. The Kardashians have the same concept, bringing in characters who the public is familiar with makes it more entertaining for viewers to watch. People also love the family dynamic and the sisterly duos; they show the arguments and drama that they have which makes people more invested. I would say for the younger half of Gen Z the D’amelio show is like Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The audience for these shows is similar as well as the age demographic. However, the D’amelio show is not as successful as Keeping Up with the Kardashians but they haven’t been around for nearly as long as each other. The D’amelio show only has three seasons and Keeping Up with the Kardashians has 20. In both of these shows the families deal with a lot of backlash from the public due to the decisions they’ve made and their private information being aired out to the public daily. Both shows do an amazing job capturing the work that they put in and the work that is put behind their business ventures while balancing their family life. These families are also very influential in many ways throughout the world because they are admired by many.
