Jeri Tyler

Welcome to my e-portfolio! I am a current senior at Longwood Univeristy with a Biology major and Chemistry minor. My ultimate career goal is to become an oncologist or OB/GYN. Throughout my years of Longwood, I have seen the need for not only adequate access to healthcare through my internships, but I have also seen the need for women’s healthcare in general to be more openly discussed.

I have participated in two independent research labs here studying neurobiology and biochemistry. In my neurobiology lab, which I also worked in during the PRISM program, we were looking at epigenetically heritable information in rats. For my biochemistry lab, we have been researching platinum-based chemotherapy drugs and different variations of them.

In addition, I have participated in many internships through Longwood University. My freshman year, I was able to shadow different physicians in Farmville to learn more about each specialty. I was able to see cardiologists, general surgeons, and so much more. I also shadowed a general surgeon from back home due to my interest in the field. My second year at Longwood, I participated in a micro-internship with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services where I worked specifically in the Risk and Compliance department. I was tasked with researching current health risk management policies nationally to help provide more information for their company and their website. During my last year at Longwood, I have been working as a medical scribe in Crewe, Virginia. With this job, I have not only been exposed to office visits and learning how to chart, I have actually be running the COVID PCR testing and will soon get my phlebotomy license to start drawing patient’s blood!
